In 1991, Philip Mills invented this weight-based fitness class. Nowadays, it can be found in 10,000 gyms that are located in 80 countries. Eight songs are used during the course of a class lasting 60 minutes. Each song is used to work out a different muscle group. When students are warming up and cooling down, special music is played. There is also a version of BODY PUMP which lasts 45 minutes. No triceps or biceps songs are played during this shortened class. Aerobic steps, barbells and free weight plates are used during these classes. A student will decide his or her goals for the class, then he or she will choose the best weight to accomplish these goals. Groups of muscles are exercised by performing dead lifts, presses, squats and other exercises that are compound-based.
