How to Stick to a Fitness Routine When you Can't Make it to the Gym. Just because you can't make it to the gym, doesn't mean you get a pass on working out and staying healthy. Succeed in your fitness goals no matter where you are. Build the Habit- Workout at the same time each day and on the same days each week to build your fitness habit at home. Start with a Plan- Write out your workout before you start exercising so you have a clear plan to execute. Don't stop early. Pressed for time? Even a 10-minute workout can improve your overall health and fitness. Focus on short burst of high intensity. Create your own gym. Dedicate an area of your home as your fitness corner. It doesn't need to be a large space. If it can fit a yoga mat you've got plenty of space. Start easy- Ease yourself into a workout routine with a low-intensity warm up. Try a slow jog around the neighborhood, 10 arm circles in each direction, 20 side-to-side skips, 10 toe touches, 5 inchworms. Perform body weight movements- Dont have fancy workout equipment at home? No problem. Try these great bodyweight movements: Pushups, air squats, sit ups, sprints, lunges, mountain climbers, burpees, jumping jacks. Invest in fitness equipment- Spice up your fitness routine with a few select pieces of low-cost space-saving exercise equipment: yoga mat, resistance bands, jump rope, set of dumbells, kettle bell, slam ball. Recruit a workout partner- Don't hog all the fitness. Invite your partner, sibling, or roommate to join you in a workout. Workout partners help push you to get the most out of your routine. Make someone hold you accountable- When you know someone expects you to achieve your fitness goals that's an extra incentive to do the work. Recruit your partner, your best friend or even your kids to be your accountability buddy. Hire a personal trainer- Yes, you can hire a virtual trainer who will create customized workouts for you, monitor your progress, and be your ultimate accountability buddy. Reward your success- every at-home workout is a huge success and you deserve to celebrate. Reward yourself with a healthy and delicious protein smoothie: 1.5 cups almond milk, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, 1 medium banana, 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds, 1 scoop whey protein powder, 1 teaspoon coco powder (optional), dash of cinnamon (optional).Practice self compassion- some days are touch and you won't always be able to get to work out. That's fine. Fitness is a journey. Let go of the guilt and recommit to your fitness tomorrow. Fresh day, fresh start!
